Why Spay & Neuter Cats?

Spaying and neutering is the single most effective way to reduce cat overpopulation and prevent suffering.
Unaltered cats reproduce quickly. One unspayed female and her offspring can lead to hundreds of kittens in just a few years, many of whom will struggle to survive outdoors without food, shelter, or medical care.
Spay and neuter:

  • Prevent unwanted litters
  • Reduce euthanasia in shelters
  • Decrease roaming, fighting, and spraying
  • Improve health and increase lifespan
  • Create calmer, healthier companion cats

For community cats, spay/neuter through TNR (Trap–Neuter–Return) stabilizes colonies and stops the cycle of endless breeding.

Cats in Heat: What It Means

Female cats can go into heat as early as 4–5 months of age.
During heat you may see:

  • Loud yowling and crying
  • Rolling and restless behavior
  • Attempting to escape outside
  • Increased affection or agitation

A heat cycle typically lasts about 5–7 days, but if the cat is not bred it can repeat every 2–3 weeks.

How many heat cycles per year?

Cats are seasonally polyestrous, meaning they cycle repeatedly during breeding season.
In warm climates or indoor settings with artificial light, a female cat can have 10–20 heat cycles per year.
This means a cat can become pregnant multiple times in a single year.

How Many Kittens Can One Cat Have?

  • Average litter size: 4–6 kittens
    • Some litters can be as large as 8 or more
    • A female cat can have 2–3 litters per year
That means one cat can produce 12–18 kittens every year.
Kittens themselves can begin reproducing at 4–5 months old, continuing the cycle.

Health Benefits of Spaying & Neutering

Spaying and neutering is not just about population control — it is lifesaving medical care.

Spaying (female cats) prevents:

  • Pyometra (a deadly uterine infection)
  • Ovarian and uterine cancer
  • Mammary cancer (risk drops by up to 90% when spayed early)

Neutering (male cats) reduces:

  • Testicular cancer
  • Roaming and fighting injuries
  • Spraying and a strong urine odor

Altered cats live longer, healthier lives.

The Reality of Overpopulation

Without spay and neuter:

  • Shelters become overcrowded
  • Healthy cats and kittens are euthanized due to lack of space
  • Community cats suffer from disease, starvation, and weather exposure

Spay/neuter is the only humane, proven solution.
